Dr Dan WeissGIS Modeller
Dan Weiss is a geographer with research interests in computational ecology, species-environment interactions, and deriving biophysical metrics from remotely sensed imagery. Dan’s primary role with MAP is to create and analyze the covariates that underpin various spatiotemporal disease models. These covariates typically consist of large (i.e., multi-terabyte) datasets that characterize environmental metrics such as temperature, moisture, and vegetation vigor through space and time. Such metrics are essential inputs disease models due to their relationships with vector (e.g., mosquito) ecology. Topically Dan’s work is focused on Malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) and human poverty, with additional contributions to research on topics including Ebola, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Marburg, Lassa, Influenza, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium knowlesi. For SEEG, Dan is principally engaged in the creation, processing, and management of very large (i.e., multi-terabyte) covariate datasets for use in modeling spatio-temporal patterns of human poverty and disease in Peter Gething's modelling group.
